Introduction to Sailing

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Who is this course for? Interested in sailing but not sure yet whether you want to commit to ASA certification courses? This is the best place to start!
  • What will you learn? This 3-hour course is taught entirely on the water by an Instructor/Captain. Discover the magic of wind powered locomotion and get a better sense of what you could learn in the ASA Curriculum. Completion of this course does not include ASA Certification.
  • Class Size: A maximum of 4 students per boat. These are private sessions scheduled on demand.
  • Price: $299 for 2 people, $20 for each additional student.

Sailing Clinic

  • Prerequisite: Some sailing qualification and experience preferred
  • Who is this course for? Students who’d like to spend time sailing to refresh their skills or help prepare for upcoming classes.  
  • What will you learn? This 3-hour hands on sailing session is entirely on the water with an Instructor and 4 other students. Refine your skill at the helm, trim sails for optimal performance and partake in different docking situations. No ASA certification is offered for the clinic. 
  • Class Size: A maximum of 5 students per boat. These are not private sessions and are generally scheduled on Saturday afternoons between 1PM and 4PM.
  • Price: $80 per student.

ASA 101: Basic Keelboat Sailing

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Who is this course for? This course is an ideal launchpad for the aspiring recreational sailor dreaming of owning their own boat, chartering rental boats, or gaining the basic skills to crew on some-one else’s sailing boat.
  • What will you learn? This course is designed to teach you to sail a boat of about 25-30 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision; a preparatory standard with no auxiliary power or navigation skills required. You will gain knowledge of basic sailing terminology, boat parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards. 
  • Class Size: A minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 5 per boat.
  • Price: $599 per person or $999 for a group of two.
  • What does the price include? Two days sailing plus some classroom time, your registration fees with ASA, your logbook, study guide with shipping, and your exam certification.

ASA 103: Basic Coastal

  • Prerequisite: ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing Certificate
  • Who is this course for? Now that you know the basics, you should take the next step to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat of about 25 to 30 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions.
  • What will you learn? On this course you will gain more knowledge on safety, rules of the road, weather, seamanship, gear & equipment, plus duties of the skipper & crew.
  • Class Size: A minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 5 per boat.
  • Price: $599 per person or $999 for a group of two.
  • What does the price include? Two days sailing plus classroom time, Coastal Cruising Made Easy study guide with free shipping, the course exam and certification.

ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising

  • Prerequisite: ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing and ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising Certificates
  • Who is this course for? Sailors who want to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered keelboat of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions. PASS THIS  COURSE AND BE ELIGIBLE TO BAREBOAT CHARTER ONE OF OUR BOATS!
  • What will you learn? You will gain knowledge of provisioning, galley operations, boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance procedures, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation, multiple anchor mooring, docking, health & safety, emergency operations, weather interpretation, and dinghy/tender operation.
  • Class Size: A minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 4 per boat.
  • Price: $799 per person or $1399 for a group of two.

ASA 105: Coastal Navigation

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Who is this course for? Sailors who want to progress to Advanced Coastal Cruising and Celestial Navigation.
  • What will you learn? There is no Sailing Skills part to this Standard. Practical application of this sailing knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard. This  2-day class is a valuable course open to all levels, with no prerequisite, and is strongly recommended. You will learn the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters.
  • Class Size: A maximum of 5 students in the classroom.

ASA 106: Advanced Coastal Cruising

  • Prerequisite: ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing and ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising Certificates
  • Who is this course for? The sailor who has gained the knowledge and experience to take on larger sailing vessels in more challenging sea conditions.
  • What will you learn? This course will equip you to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length in coastal and inland waters, in any conditions.
  • Class Size: A minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 4 per boat.
  • Price: $799 per person or $1399 for a group of two.

ASA 114: Cruising Catamaran

  • Prerequisite: ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing, ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising and ASA 104 BareBoat Cruising certificates.
  • Who is this course for? Sailors looking for the necessary skills to skipper an auxiliary-powered sailing cruising catamaran of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day liveaboard cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions. 
  • What will you learn? This Knowledge of catamaran structure, components and features, performance under sail and power, boat systems, seamanship and safety, heavy weather operation, and emergency response.
  • Class Size: A minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 4 per boat.

Small marine diesel engine maintenance

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Who is this course for? The boat owner or charterer who wants practical knowledge to maintain a small marine diesel engine. 
  • What will you learn? In this 8-hour course we cover engine systems, theory and operation. An actual hands-on lab is included to demonstrate changing lube and fuel filters, bleeding the fuel system, water pumps, and battery-charging systems. As a recreational boat owner, you will learn how to conduct routine maintenance on your own diesel engine from an instructor with decades of experience in owning and maintaining boats. This is not an ASA sailing course and no certifications is offered.
  • Class Size: a maximum of 4 students
  • Price: $349 per student or $499 for group of two.

ASA 118: Docking Endorsement

  • Prerequisite: None, although an additional $50 is payable for students who have not completed ASA 101.
  • Who is this course for? Both novice and experienced sailors will benefit from this course as the techniques apply on up to 50-foot inboard single-screw cruising yachts. Upon successful completion of this course, students experience a significant increase in enjoyment in all of their sailing ventures because they will no longer fear docking at the end of the day. Spouses particularly enjoy mastering these skills because it helps them to become more proficient and confident as crew members.
  • What will you learn? Able to safely and efficiently dock an auxiliary powered (single inboard or outboard engine) sailboat. Knowledge of basic auxiliary power theory, engine and steering controls, proper use of dock lines, crew communication and safety. 
  • Class Size: A maximum of 4 students
